Design Engineer BIW - Contract - Automotive

Our client is the leading research institution for the automotive, defence, aerospace and motorsport industries synonymous with vehicle engineering design, test and development.

Their experienced engineers have significant experience of working with transport customers from all over the world on a wide range of programmes and projects.

They have requirements for Design Engineers for body in white who will be working with the design leader and be responsible for the leading and / or working in design projects responsible for design, engineering, development and delivery of internal and external projects to support client requirements. The emphasis for this role will be automotive BIW although there will be a need to assist in other types of work. 


Skills and Competencies.

- Ability to head projects and small teams
- Proficient CAD user preferably in Catia V5 (Experience in Pro E may be advantageous)
- Good visualisation and engineering skills covering BIW, Trim and general design. Has a good understanding of the sub system elements and their interactions
- A working level understanding of Microsoft based systems ( MS office suite etc)
- Confidence and ability to be customer facing
- Working knowledge of the design process ideally including:
o Generating 3D models and 2D detailed drawings
o Design from concept through to production
o Component and system design for BIW
o DFMEAs
o Writing engineering reports
o Engineering calculations
o Supplier Liaison
o Customer liaison
o Producing 8-Ds
o Testing and verification
- Good communicator whilst being comfortable working with a number of different teams
- The ability to work autonomously either heading or within a team
- An understanding of risk management
- Confident in making data driven decisions
- Happy to work in a flexible way to support the delivery of the overall objectives

Ideal Knowledge

- General design processes and protocols
- Working knowledge of Defence, OEM and / or automotive development requirements
- Good standard of education and learning relevant to the role ideally at degree level
- Working knowledge of PLM systems e.g. Teamcenter, Smarteam etc...TCe trained

Experience (ideally)

- Experienced in the design process at either an OEM or first tier supplier.
- Experienced in releasing parts and developing a BOM (Bill of Materials) within the virtual series
- Experienced in working with other design teams to ensure integration and package requirements are met.
- Worked and operated within an engineering and/or manufacturing environment within the automotive, defence or aerospace industries
- Demonstrates a flexible approach to the way they work
- Experienced at solving engineering problems
- Used to working within a highly productive team
- Used to working with limited supervision
