Lead Structural Test Engineer

Our client is a first tier supplier to the global aviation industry. A leader in the manufacture of highly complex composite and metallic aerostructures and engine products, our business is equally focused on military and civil markets.
Reporting to the Chief Engineer, the primary function of the role is to lead the company’s test activities, whilst being a specialist in structural test.
This position will be a key position in aiding the expansion of current capabilities in Test Facilities to meet the increase in capacity and growth requirements over the next 2-5 years.
In addition to structural testing, this role will also perform Fire Testing to ISO 2685 and Environmental Testing.
Key Accountabilities:
- Support contracts from initial bid activity, advising through the design phase of test rigs and through to successfully performing and reporting tests.
- Co-ordinate assembly and buy-off of the test rig, commissioning and hold test readiness reviews.
- Co-ordination of test operations from the point the Senior Designer hands over responsibility for rig assembly through to delivery of the test reports.
- Perform tests, including instrumentation and set-up / operation of data acquisition systems, and apply complex and precisely controlled loading to aircraft structures for qualification and certification purposes, to National and International standards.
- Liaising with, supervising and guiding customers and suppliers through established practices and policies and coordinating activities for tasks outside of the immediate responsibility of Test Facilities.
- Seeking low cost and simple solutions to practical problems
- Mentoring and managing Junior Test Engineers and sharing expertise for development purposes.
Required:
- Minimum HNC/ HND qualification (or equivalent) in a Mechanical Engineering discipline is required.
- Approximately 5 years experience in a relevant senior test engineering role.
- An understanding of manufacturing processes and general engineering principles and process.
- A detailed knowledge of hydraulics and setting up and using hydraulic servo control systems with force feedback control is essential.
- Experience of successfully leading small teams.
- Good working knowledge of MS Office programmes.
- Ability to manage projects effectively to time and cost.
Advantageous:
- Strong capabilities with instrumentation and data acquisition systems would be a distinct advantage.
- Knowledge of the FCS Aerospace SmarTEST control system is preferable but training can be provided.
- Test Facilities is accredited by UKAS to ISO 17025 and experience of working within a highly regulated environment and ideally having previously been approved by UKAS as a test engineer would be an advantage.
