Test Facilities Maintenance Engineer

The Instrumentation and Maintenance team is part of Powertrain Test operations and Product Development. The team provides technical support to the Powertrain Engine and Emission Test areas at Whitley and Gaydon. The team's primary function is to support the installation, calibration, maintenance, rectification and repair of a range of complex instrumentation and facility infrastructure. The data delivered from the facility is used to drive the design and control technology in order to meet required vehicle level targets. The role covers day to day issue resolution, new technique and method development. The team works extensively with a wide range of test facility support teams and test bed users. The maintenance role is specifically focused on Mileage Accumulation and Emission Testing. A number of other IT related tasks and functions are supported within this remit. The job role is: To provide corrective maintenance support to ensure facility output is maintained, to plan and deliver the preventative and predictive measures and to manage suppliers who support this activity. To manage this activity to ensure that it is delivered to the required standard at minimum cost. The facility runs 24hrs/day, 7 days per week; the team works with pride and passion to ensure that the capabilities of the support systems have the functionality and robustness required to meet the demand.
Skills Required:
An understanding of safe working practices and methods on electrical and electronic systems. Demonstrate an understanding of electrical principles and units. Practical ability to deliver service, maintenance, and repair of instrumentation equipment, Installation and setup of transducers and actuators. Technical/Theoretical ability to work on electric, electronic, pneumatic, and mechanical systems. An understanding of instrumentation control and monitoring systems, including diagnosis of issues. Data Analysis skills, including ability to define and measure symptoms and analyse information. Ability to make use of data gathered to define solution and implement process improvement. Confidence to take ownership, prioritise and follow up on short term decisions. Good PC Skills including both software and hardware.
Skills Preferred:
An understanding of internal combustion engines, transmission, driveline, emission systems and subsystems. An understanding of test quality data and analysis, preparation of calibration documentation in support of Certification activities. An understanding of the regulatory and legislative requirements of external agencies and organisations.
Experience Required:
Competency to apply safe working practices in the laboratory and test environment. Competency and understanding of test instrumentation, equipment, calibration, maintenance and operation. Valid practical experience in the workplace and familiar with relevant regulative requirement, e.g. BS7671. Understand the principles of earthing/protection and associated protective devices. Demonstrate an understanding of electrical systems, switchgear and circuit types. An understanding of computer interface methods, electronics and electrical systems. Having worked in team environment and been a good team player, self-motivated and confident with good communication skills, verbal and written. Demonstrate the agility and flexibility required to deliver within tight deadlines. Demonstrate perseverance and ability to complete tasks in difficult circumstances. Diagnose basic faults and recognise their associated symptoms. Work with a range of cable types and carry out correct terminations and connections. Identify motor and power circuit faults. Use circuit diagrams as an aid to maintenance. Access electrical enclosures and replace fuses, reset overloads etc. Perform electrical isolation, testing for dead, etc on a wide range of devices and circuits safely.
Experience Preferred:
Ability to identify a wide range of electrical equipment & devices and understand their principles of operation/connections. Recognise the most common industrial motor types and understand their operation, connections and maintenance requirements. Use electrical test equipment effectively and carry out testing of a range of motors, solenoids, cables, etc (using insulation, continuity, tong testers). Project management.
Education Required:
Ideally educated to Degree level in Electrical/Electronic field or related areas i.e. Pneumatics, Hydraulics, Mechanical. Alternatively HNC/HND/Foundation Degree in Electrical/Electronic engineering or related area.

May be required to support activity at Gaydon.
