Test Laboratory Team Leader
West Sussex, England
Young Calibration was formed in 1996, to support instrument calibration activities within the automotive test industry, namely products utilised on engine and vehicle test rigs, with a specialism for fluid flow instrumentation. The company has grown to a ~£1M turnover operation, employing 10 staff and providing both test and calibration services to customers worldwide.
In 1999 the company designed, manufactured and commissioned its first Calorimetric Test Rig, to provide passenger car OEM's with an independent radiator performance test facility. Over the coming years the facility has been upgraded to cover oil coolers, chargecoolers and cooling pack systems. In 2009, due to increase utilisation on the first test rig, and a customer requirement for high pressure sidepod duct testing, a second open exit test rig was built and commissioned to serve the more active and demanding F1, Indycar and low volume sports car requirements.
The Test Laboratory Team Leader will be responsible for the day to day operation of the two calorimetric wind tunnel test facilities, and ensuring customer expectations are managed in terms of quality, technical and timing. You will be responsible for the day to day operation of the facility which will include, customer liaison, quotations, customer advice on test plans, operation of the test rigs where required, design of test methods and procedures, test rig equipment maintenance and calibration, day to day validation of test results, quality control, test scheduling, technician supervision and training, spares and parts management, and maintaining the relevant ISO 17025 standards and lines of traceability.
A major part of the role will be to develop the facility to meet the future testing requirements of OEM and motorsport test requirements whilst improving the test rig utilisation and effectiveness, to maximise income revenue. You will be expected to be a major contributor in the planning and assessment of facility improvements, and the implementation of these improvement actions, which maybe, but not limited to, test rig automation, additional working patterns, software upgrades, staff training, etc. You will be expected to monitor and control costs and labour resources.
Candidates should possess a good engineering background, ideally covering electrical, electronics, electro-mechanical and mechanical systems, but have an in-depth knowledge of thermal fluid systems. You should be equally adept at undertaking a hands on role of operating the test rigs where required, as well as taking responsibility for the overall running of the facility. Experience in instrumentation calibration, NI Labview, variable speed drives and control systems would be desirable.
